Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Atlus’ most recent game is Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. It’s the latest in a long line of high-quality releases in recent years, whether new, remastered, or enhanced re-releases. Despite this, Atlus has made strange judgments in practically every one of their releases. Whether it’s a lack of feature parity across platforms or aggravating console exclusivity, Atlus’ anti-consumer actions hinder its own success.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is available for $49.99 on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC, although each edition is not comparable in terms of value. Don’t get me wrong: Ultimax is a fantastic game, but it does have a few flaws. Only the PlayStation and PC versions of the game will receive rollback netcode this summer. The lobby multiplayer feature is exclusive to PlayStation, making the PlayStation edition the only complete version of the game; nonetheless, the Switch and PC versions are priced the same.
I’m not a game creator, but I can’t imagine Atlus not releasing Ultimax on a single platform, such as the PlayStation 4. Then, once you’ve received your sales money and have more development time, release the full version on additional platforms so that they’re all of equal worth. In the same vein as Atlus’ Catherine Full Body.
However, that release had its own set of issues. The adult-themed puzzle game was upgraded and re-released on PS4 in 2019 (and later on Switch in 2020), however it was first released in Japan. It was given a Vita version there, however it was later scrapped for a western release. It’s reasonable that Atlus came to this conclusion. It was late in the Vita’s life cycle and a gadget with limited support. Even still, it would have been fantastic if Atlus had released a digital-only version of the game outside of Japan.
Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight and Persona 5 Dancing in Starlight were in the same boat as Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight. The Vita versions of both games were never released in the United States. Persona 4 Dancing All Night was released with its release, and it was finally freed from being a Vita exclusivity, receiving a digital release on PlayStation 4. There was, and continues to be, a snag. The game is exclusively available as part of the Endless Night Collection, which includes all three Persona Dancing games. It is not possible to buy it individually, which is a waste of money.
Then there’s Persona 4 Golden, which received a remastered PC port in 2020 but is still unavailable on any modern console. Every canonical sequel to Persona 4 Golden is now available on modern consoles with the release of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, although the origin tale is still missing. It is the franchise’s 25th anniversary, after all. Perhaps Atlus is saving this highly anticipated release to commemorate the franchise, but for the time being, we are in the dark.
Atlus is, in my opinion, one of the top game developers in the industry. It consistently releases, at the very least, excellent games. Despite this, the studio takes strange decisions that make it feel like it’s shooting itself in the foot. These errors appear to be easily accounted for if time and effort were devoted in the appropriate direction.
Atlus should have a strong enough financial relationship with Sega that if the company has to focus on one platform for their forthcoming projects, they should do so. Concentrate on one version before deciding whether or not to release on additional platforms. We’ve seen it work in the past. Last year’s Shin Megami Tensei V went off without a hitch, and Atlus has a robust library of over ten 3DS games with little to complain about. Hopefully, Atlus can get to a point where we can obtain great games without bizarre restrictions in the future.
